My convict fry is about 2 - 3 weeks old and they are still in the tank with their parents.

I took the cave out they spawned in so that it might delay their next spawn.

They are still looking after the broad but i was wondering 2 things

1) how long will it be before they spawn again.

2) when they get a little larger i was gonna put them in my community tank with my platys guppies and neons, will they be ok in here.

Answers:

convicts will spawn around every 4 - 6 weeks once they have paired off.

Taking the cave out may have bought you a little more time although they will probably dig a hole in the gravel and lay the eggs in that.

They prefer caves to spawn in but they will be just as happy to dig a hole in a hidden corner of tank and then they will eat the the broad to protect the new eggs.

As for your 2nd question the fry would be fine in your community tank (once they are not bite size) but your other fish wont be safe from them.

Once the fry get bigger and mature they will become aggressive and terriotial and something like a guppy wont stand much of a chance once they pair off and start to breed.

I think your parent convicts bred at the right size 4-5" ,but remember, that's the size they'll grow in a small tank. I bred a different type of cichlid just over 2"big but discovered as the pair grew older they would not breed again,so maybe yours could do the same. The babies when bigger should be alright with platys and guppies but the neon tetras wont like them.

The Convicts will easily catch the slow moving Guppies, and will chase the Neons too. Get them their own tank (with some other fish on the lower end of aggressive like Loaches) or give them away. They will spawn in about another 3 weeks. Take the current fry out before the parents spawn again though. They will show aggression towards their first brood if they are left in during the second spawning.
