Do I have to treat the water in my 5 teired fountain if I want to put coi and shabunkins2007-11-24 23:11:16

I have large five or teired fountain and I bought six small coi, some large goldfish and like a dozen large shabunkins and tossed them in. Its been one week and a few goldfish have died. But most are seeming to thrive. Should I be treating the water?

well you have more than enough mechanical filtration. The water falling off each tier will add oxygen into the water and keep the water from becoming stagnent. You should however add dechlorinator to it although if it has been running for awhile befor you added the fish most of the chlorine should have evaporated out of the water. Do you know how many gallons are in it? Is it possible to add carbon filtration to it. Goldfish produce a lot of waste and that amonia will build up in in effect suffocate the fish in thier own waste. Carbon filtration will help remove some of that waste and once it cycles just like any body of water with livestock in it bacteria in the water will also help break down the massive ammounts of waste produced by goldfish.

Is the fountain they are being held in hold 1000 gallons? If it isn't then its intirely too small for that load of fish. Yes you have to treat the water and you need a filter. You can't just toss fish into water, do nothing and know nothing about them and expect them to live. Many more fish are going to die. You have made a huge mistake.

Hi Daniel, You seem to be taking a very cavalier attitude to fish keeping-especially as you don't seem to know anything about it, why on earth didn't you ask advice BEFORE going ahead & 'tossing' a large number of creatures into an unknown & most probably hostile environment?. You will need a vast volume of well filtered water to support such a population.

I recommend you join one of the online pond forums & ask advice immediately before the tragedy you are witnessing gets worse. The one below should be good for starters. Good luck-I hope no more die.
