Do angelfish eat snails2007-11-24 23:11:09

We have 3 snails that we take very good care of. They had grown quite large and were fun to watch. Recently our black molly fish died and my son was pretty sad, so I offered to get him a new. I asked the guy at the store what would go with our tank (red tail shark, 3 snails. 3 tetra, 1 beta and a black molly) he told us a few choices and the angelfish was one choice. After about a week I notice our snails are not crawling too much and they have lost their antenaes. I am pretty sure the angel got them, is this something that will kill our snails? I read the antenena will grow back, but I wanted to know if I should take the angelfish out first?

They might! Angelfish, much like Betta, are very vain fish. They will attack fish that are pretty. They will even attack each other sometimes! I would have never suggested an Angel Fish for your tank because they don't generally do well with Tetra or any other quick moving fish. They like theirs space to swim freely and also like a good hide. They will thrive on a variety of feed. Brine shrim, bloodworms, etc. are all great alternative foods to keep these guys from going after the tastey snails.

I don't think you need to take them out, but feeding them a diet with many other flavors may help save your snail's antennae. If they become aggressive towards each other it i likely because they are spawinging. If you notice that they are cleaning the sides of the tank it is because they ARE spawning and looking for a good place for the nest of eggs. I would remove them from the community tank if this is the case.

Each angelfish is different and they really develope their own little personalities. If you break this behavior with alternate foods, it is possible that they will live long and happy lives in the community tank. If the aggression doesn't stop after a week or so of regular food variety, I would say remove them to a separate tank.
