Do fish get lonely/depressed living in a fish tank2007-11-24 23:11:13

I have fish in a 10 gallon tank ans 3 tiny fish but I sometimes wonder if they are sad or lonely. What a boring life. I feel especially sad when people have bettas or goldfish in those really small fish bowls. Do fish have feelings? Do they get sad or depressed in their tanks?

but additionally even if they could remember things, they dont know that they can go any where, all they know is the tank, so they probally dont realize that they are missing anything.

Fish seem to have very short memories, so I imagine them swimming back and forth in the tank saying "hey, I wonder what's over here... hey, I wonder what's over here... oh, hello, I don't believe we've met..."

male betas have to be kept apart, they'll kill each other if u don't. if u really think they're bored, try putting some plants or small castles made for aqariums in there for them to 'explore'.

They have never known any different. To them that is just life.

One of my fish used to go into the corner of the tank and push his head out of the water until we pushed him back under one day he died cause of it. If that isnt a depressed fish I dont know what it is. So YES

they might get lonely if it was 1 fish in a big tank. but a fish tank or a pond is what they grew up with and that's all they know. that's the way i feel about birds. they are all cooped up in a cage, but if it has another bird in there with it and it has company, it's fine.

Hi Mere, contrary to what several people have said, Goldfish at least have excellent memories as well as being intelligent & friendly so they certainly do have these emotions. Fish definitely thrive on the company of other fish as they are always interacting & multiple fish are invariably more active than loners.
