Does catfish(Hypostomus plecostomus) and/or snails eats excrement2007-11-24 23:11:31

i have a catfish (Hypostomus plecostomus) and 2 small snails in my fish tank and i would like yo know if they eat other fishes excrement?

do i have to feed the snails? or they just have their own way to search for food? cuz.. i have the snails since 2 weeks already and havent feed them or i'd rather say, i never feeded them(2yrs ago i used to have a fish tank and had little snails too).

another question about the catfish, i have a Hypostomus plecostomus, i bought it yesterday and havent feed him anything yet. does he eats only at night? does it matter which vegetable do i feed him? could it be just leafs(the kind of leafs that chinese ppl eats)? or can i just feed him with flakes?

i know cat fishs eats algae, but i wonder if they also eats excrement of other fishes? what about the snails?

no they dont eat excrement. snails eat the uneaten food that floats to the bottom and the algae the tank produces. snails need more than just algae. you should purchase sinking veggie or algae tablets at a pet store. you can also feed the snail veggies like broccoli or apple slices. you should remove these from the tank after the snails are finished with a feeding. do not leave them in there or they will contaminate your tank. the same thing for the pleco

I'm afraid there just isn't any way to make excrement tasty. so no, they don't eat it.

they do eat algae and any extra flake or pellet food that falls to the bottom and most of their feeding is done at night (especially in a new tank that probably doesn't feel like home yet)
