i have a red beta right now and i just bought a beige brown colored algae eater fish cuz i heard that a beta can live with another fish if it's not a bright color. is that true? will they be ok together?

Answers:

A beige colored algae eater sounds like it is probably a Plecostomus. Common Plecostomus get about 2 feet long, so unless you have a 75 gallon tank waiting for it, I would return it. The other possibility is that you have a Chinese Algae Eater. In this case, you will want to get rid of it because it will get more aggressive as it matures and will attack your Betta. As GG said, Bettas attack fish with long fins, they don't really care about colors. If you need any more help, email me at nosoop4u@cox.net.

yes it is fine when young but the algae eater can get a bit of a temper when its older. your beta is fine with most fish but not any to small to be eaten by or eat yours. i have other brightly color fish with mine that are fine its more the shape that sets them off or there own kind

Buying an algae to go in with a betta is a bad idea, It may be ok for now but once it matures it will start giving the betta hickies, Sucking on the betta, And for future refrence, A betta can live with other fish with bright colours, not a guppy because it has flowing fins, And you want to watch what fish you add with a betta as the other fish could shread him (ie a tiger barb), Ask on here if the fish is comptable before you buy one, And dont just listen to anyone, Look out for someone with a 'Top Contributor' Badge in fish, As they will tend to know what they are talking about.

If you added the betta first, then the algae eater, you may have problems later on.

For future reference, always add the betta last when adding tankmates. As far as an algae eater..stick with a freshwater mystery snail instead.
