Goldfish chasing

Goldfish chasing2007-11-24 23:32:30

I've had goldfish before but not for a few years. I bought 2 new goldfish half a week ago and they're in a suitable environment; but one has begun chasing the other and seems to be 'kissing' it. The behaviour isn't aggressive; and I'm assuming it's not breeding behaviour since the goldfish are still only very young and the one doing the chasing is not 'bumping' the other one as breeding behaviour describes it would.

Is this normal playful behaviour or is there another explanation? Thanks.

As long as your fish aren't actively being aggressive with one another (make sure to keep an eye on their scales - if any are missing, chances are that they may be fighting beyond what is "normal"), then you don't need to worry.

I have two goldfish and they engage in the same behavior. It's just their way of playing and establishing a dominant role within their environment. It's rather amusing to watch them play. They were a bit more aggressive the first time I put them in the tank together, but after a few weeks they were very obviously playing. They are almost always near each other in the tank and even "cuddle" when they're sleeping (they hover next to each other, quite close).

They could just be playing. I have two male goldfish, and they chase each other all the time. However, they might each think that the other one is female.
They're probably just testing each other out and getting to know each other as well as establishing a pecking order.
Playing most likely.
