It depends what kind of fish. In many fish, the female is wider than the male in the stomach area (because she is carrying eggs). This is not true for all fish, and is really only a guide. In some fish (Guppies, Swordtails, Labyrinth Fish), the male will be more colorful and have a larger tail as well. EDIT: Chinese Fish is not a fish. There are Chinese Hi Fin Loaches, Chinese Algae Eaters, and Chinese Fighting Fish (really Siamese). Be more specific or provide a picture, Chinese fish hardly narrows it down...

What species of fish are you looking to find out? Some fish have different colors for each gender, some are wider, some have different fins, some have obvious ovipositors. Each fish species is different so nobody can give you an answer that will fit for all.

Well, maybe this answer will sound silly, but it depends on what type of fish. Most fish, tropicals and saltwater, you can tell by coloring or finnage. Males are more colorful or will have differently shaped fins. Or females tend to be bigger. Other fish, like goldfish and many bottom feeders are virtually indistinguishable except during breeding season and even then it's hard to tell.
