How can you tell if a Chocolate Chip Starfish is dead or not
I have a well established and stable salt water aquarium and yesterday I bought a Chocolate Chip Starfish. Acclimated him over several hours to my tank and water. When I finally put him in the tank, he immediately walked from the front of the tank to the back and stopped. This morning he was in the same place. I moved him to the front of the tank, and I'm hopeing he will have moved by the time I get home from work, but if not, how can I tell if he is actually alive or not? Do these guys play dead in a new enviroment? HELP I have had my tank for approx 4 years, but this is my first attempt with a starfish.
Answers:Well in a well established tank the star should be fine just as anything else he may need time to warm up to the new environment. Picking him and moving him will only make him feel more uneasy in the tank so if he moved to the back it was just because he felt more secure back there leave him be and when you get home if he is still in the same spot then try target feeding him with a turkey baster. Those star fish arent very active and especially when first introduced he m ay just need time to warm up. If he stays in the same spot for a long time with no motion what so ever and doesnt respond to target feeding withing 2 weeks then id start to check his pulse if you will. (not literally)
well starfish live in the same place for most of there lives...
they dont move much. he is probly alive.
