How can you tell male from female cichlids
For African/Rift Lake mbunas. You might be able to tell by the color of the fish. In some species, males tend to be more colorful (peacocks). In some mbunas you will notice that the male have egg spots on their anal fin. In thecase of River cichlids like Kribensis, males have longer finnage and usually one big spot on their dorsal fin.
For Central American Cichlids, sometimes they will have orange bellies if they are female as in the case of convicts.
Certain cichlids are difficult to tell no matter what. These include angelfish, severums, keyholes, discus?.
Sometimes you can tell by their fins. Some males have longer and sharper fins while the female have shorter and rounder fins.

Not too sure on most cichlids, but with oscars you have to either vent them or wait for them to mate. There are no physical features that define the sex.
