how does the vaccum work in the tank, i have one already, does it only suck up the water or does it suck up the gravel at the bottom of the tank as well.

I was given the tank from my boyfriends brother and wasn't really told how to clean it and all that sorts.

Answers:

1. Place an empty bucket near and below the aquarium. Grasp the hose 4-6 inches above the top of Gravel Vacuum with hand on top. Place the other end of hose in the bucket.

2. Completely submerge cylinder and cap in aquarium water. Move the cylinder up and down rapidly five or six times or until siphoning begins.

3. Some gravel will rise slightly in the cylinder as debris is removed, but will fall down as cylinder is lifted. when bucket needs to be emptied, remove vacuum from the water to stop flow. Empty bucket and repeat process until 25% of the water has been removed.

Some Tips

1. Unplug heater and filter before draining aquarium water.

2. Perform monthly 25% water changes to help maintain a healthy aquarium.

3. Use a water conditioner every time you add fresh tap water to your aquarium.

4. Be sure your bucket is only used for aquarium water.

5. Never use soap or detergent while cleaning aquarium or equipment.

It depends on whether it's done with tubing, a bucket and gravity (a typical siphon) or an actual pump (the kind that hooks up to an faucet). I find that if the tubing used for a normal siphon is of large enough diameter, or if the gravel is of small grade, it can easily suck up a few cups worth of gravel. With a pump though, it's usually not strong enough to pick up and hold gravel, which is why I like them so much better because you can really dig around in the gravel and vacuum out a lot of waste (much more efficient).
