How fast do Oscars grow

How fast do Oscars grow2007-11-24 23:33:46

I recently bought 2 red oscars about 2 weeks ago. And I have them in a 29g tank for the time being and intend on getting a 100g in the near future to move them into. They went from being 3 inches to 4. How fast do they usually grow so I'll know if I have to try and pinch pennies to buy a 100g tank before October.

Answers:

Depending on the amount of feed you give them it can vary. There is nothing wrong with feeding them live feeders from time to time, just wouldn't recommend it as their only diet.

Change water every week (not every day) unless your Nitrogen cycle was not completed before they went in. Water changes are very necessary for Oscars on a regular basis because they could otherwise wind up with Hith (which is so nasty I won't even post the pictures of what it can do out here - just do an image search out on Yahoo on "Hith" and you will see what I mean).

Here is some good info for you on Oscars. Defintely get them into that 100g tank ASAP, but good for you for being conscience enough to ask these good questions.

Very quickly
they grow fairly quickly -- 100 g is a good size tank - I had 2 in a 55 gal and the killed each other..
I happen to have four oscars. :] yup. at first we had a smaller tank. they were real small and grew quickly they will stop growing if tehre is no space, but they wont be happy, they are aggressive fish, by the way, so. yea. I would get a bigger tank, we have a 180 gallon tank.. and they are 5-6 inches.
quickly like hell.
They grow fast, but you should be ok till October. Only thing, they put out a lot of waste, and are very messy eaters. Don't overfeed them, and you need to do water changes geez, I'd say every 3-4 days of at least 25-30%. The tanks too small for them, as you're obviously aware, and the ammonia & nitrates will build up quickly. Another thing you'll need to watch until you get the bigger tank, they may start getting aggressive with one another because of the lack of space. Just keep an eye on them. One last thing, you didn't mention it but I know most people like to do it, don't feed them live fish. 1. Live fish can spread diseases to them, because they're usually "feeder goldfish", and not as well cared for. 2. It doesn't provide the right nutrients for them. 3. It's messier then pellets-causing the tank to be dirtier. 4. If you ever decide to switch to a different food, they're very likely to not accept that, because they like the fish. So stick to pellets, flakes, blood worms, beef heart, worms, crickets, etc. Make sure to vary their diet. Good luck!
As a rule, you should change 10% of your water once a week. I think your are doing too much too often. Just the frequent disturbance can bother the fish. Expect a 3" oscar to be 11-12" in a year.
