How hard is it to turn a fresh water aquarium into a salt water aquarium And what will I need2007-11-24 23:33:46

I've had my fresh water set up and established for almost a year now and I want to make it into a salt water. I want to know how hard it would be to do this, how long will it take, what will I need to do this, and about how much should it cost??

Does maintaining and keeping up a salt water cost much more than fresh.

If you can, please answer some of my questions, and any advice or comments are welocome.

It all depends on the size of your aquarium. I wouldnt recomend starting a saltwater tank in anything under a 55 gallon. As far as materials go.you will need salt (instant ocean), a meter to test salt levels, a good filter (not undergravel), and sand, crushed coral or agrinite (for substrate). Thats for your basic salt water set up (fish only). If you want crabs starfish etc. you need iodine to help the molt and grow. Again as far as cost goes it depends on the size of your tank. For a 55 gallon setup the above materials will run $100-150. In salt water the bigger you go the less matience you have. Also there are speical animals you can get to do the cleaning for you. ie snails crabs starfish. Every other month you need to change about 1/4 of your water. In order to do this you will need to by more salt. Around 20 bucks for 50 gallon supply. Any other questions feel free to ask.

to go from freshwater to salt water just add one half container of iodized kitchen salt =)

well first of all you cant have the same fish, so im guessing u dont have ur freshwater fish anymore, but as far as i know just add salt made for aquariums
