How long after setting up an aquarium can you add the fish2007-11-24 23:33:48

I added all the gravel and decorations and the filter has been running for 2 days. I also added 'cycle' which is some chemicals to add beneficial bacteria. How long should I wait before putting the fish in? I am putting one goldfish in.

Answers:

This depends on whether your tank is going to be saltwater or freshwater.

For a new saltwater tank it is recommended that you wait for one "cycle" in your tank, after adding your live rock, live sand, and pre mixed saltwater solution. One cycle can be anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks.

For a new freshwater tank it is recommended that you wait 48 hours. If it were any other fish than goldfish, you should wait until the temperature in the tank is completely stable. However with goldfish, as long as its on the better sides of boiling and freezing, everything should be okay.

you should be goof now just float the bags they are in so they get used to the temp and remember never to spill some of the water into your tank (the water from their bags) because it could have infections in it.

usually you only have to wait 24 hours for the extra chemicals to evaporate. Or there are products you can add, then you can use it right away.

Hard to kill a goldfish, they can put up with anything (just about)

You can do it right now if you like, just remember to add the de-chlorinization chems. I've forgotten the name of it but it removes the chemicals from tapwater that would otherwise kill the fish.
