Not very long.but it also depends on what kind of fish. The only fish that i have had experiance with is black Mollies and Beta's.both of them i had to get the males out right away because they will eat the eggs

I assume you mean Betta, and you remove him as soon as the eggs start to hatch.

If your fish is a live bearing fish like a Molly the babies just need plenty of places to hide. Mama will eat them as well. If your fish is like the male Betta; a Labyrinth fish, then leave him alone. The eggs fall and he goes and COLLECTS them to put back in the bubble nest to grow. They are in no real danger from him until they are free swimming. Again; plenty of hiding grass. You want to keep all your live bearing fish? There is a specially designed floater tank for the babies to keep mama and daddy from getting to them. Any pet store can advise you in this area I would think.
