I've successfully breed Kribensis Cichlids and Angelfish,

With the Kribs, the female will find herself a cave - or under a rock and "squirt" her eggs to the roof of the cave, the male will then come in and fertilize the eggs, about 4 days later, the fry have hatched and are living off the egg sack, at about 7 days, mother and father will take them on tours around the tank, beating up any fish who dares eats them, as for the angelfish, the are laid usually on a clean and prepared leaf (Mum and Dad would have been vigorously cleaning before laying - a good "get ready for babies" sign. Then about 4 days the fry are wriggling their way out, and same with the kribs, eat their egg sacks and then about a week, they are fry swimming and need brine shrimp eggs as food. The initial gestation period divers from fish species. My angels were about 8 months when they bred first.

it depends guppies for example has a gestation of 21 to 31 days live bearing then there is fish such as tiger barb that are egg scatterers take only 3 to 5 days to hatch convict cichlids on the other hand lay eggs in caves and 3 to 5 days they hatch take another 3 to 5 days to be able to swim so it would be more helpful to no what type of fish you are asking about!
