How much are maintenance costs on a large aquarium2007-11-24 23:34:47

I'm interested in buying a 60-100 gallon saltwater aquarium but would rather pay an experienced person to do the routine maintenance.

Any idea what it would cost? Are the rates per gallon? Also, approximately how often would it need to be done?

I have a 350 gallon saltwater reef tank. I do all the maintenace on it. The only thing that is painstaking, is doing the water exchange once a month. 1/3 of the water has to be syphoned out, and then refilled with fresh water. Other than that, its pretty easy. You get all the aquatic life in together, and they start regulating everything in the water. Snail, turbo snails, starfish, featherdusters, anemone's etc. They all work like filters to begin with. So a 60-100 gallon tank will be really easy to take care of. Plus you kinda bond with everything in the tank.

Personally, if you have never had a aquarium of that size then I would suggest you should start out with a smaller one. Even though salt water aqauruims are beautiful they are a lot of work and responsibility. I would suggest that you do some research on what all needs to be done to keep one and to get one started. Also talk to your local pet stores. Some do provide service when it comes to large tanks. I know that mine does. Personally, I perfer fresh water tanks.

Salt water? Youre gonna pay someone an arm and a leg to keep it up, even if they do a good job its still gonna look cruddy, do yourself a favor and stick with a freshwater aquarium! The fish may not be as colorful and exotic but then they aint as expesive either! There is actually very little maint on a freshwater aquarium if done right!

I have no idea how much it costs for someone to do the maintenance. But, id do know salt water tanks are very expensive without paying for that. good luck
