no petstore will carry them. you must order from a breeder. the international betta counsel website (ibc.org) usually has links to breeders websites. also you could find your local chapter of the IBC (mine would be NYC - www.babb2000.org) and find more local breeders.

aquabid.com might provide you more direct results. breeders list bettas and other types of fish for auction, kinda like ebay. bettas are listed by tail type on the main page, or you could type "butterfly" in the search box and get all results listed by category and see what comes up under Betta - Halfmoon. there are mostly blues and reds so maybe specify a color instead and go from there. the only problem is that the quality of the bettas varies from week to week, so if you don't find what you're looking for, try back in a few days.

prices look like $14-30 per fish (the $30 is a black butterfly) plus shipping, which can vary most often between $20-35. (if you ship from S.E. Asia it's usually that much to ship to the US plus $5 more for the US trans-shipping.) this is what you would expect to pay with an independent breeder website too. the key to it is, you buy multiple bettas (usually up to 6) and save quite a bit on shipping (especially with the independent sellers).

They can be pricey as a true Butterfly Half Moon with good color is a show betta. (Just like a pure bred dog.) If you have money to burn Faith's bettatalk is a good place to go. Otherwise aquabid is good place. (Just be wary of sellers with less than excellent reviews.) Another place to go is the IBC site and see if a local chapter is having a show, or auction. Often breeders will sell spare stock that isn't good breeding stock for a song. (To anyone other than a breeder these are often beautiful bettas.)
