i dont think they actually recognize the owner. it is their greedy nature to eat and coupled with the fact if they are used to human presence, they shed their inhibition and come to people. It's like Pavlov's conditioning. They equate people as feeding time. They come to you expecting a treat. I doubt if the owner's wife or friend approach they would shy away. They will still approach for food. So I guess it is not true that they can recognize. Unless someone can conclusively prove this theory, I still believe no.

I do not think so, they do however know when feeding time and will wait to be fed. Thereby giving the impression of recognizing there owner.

I was just talking to my son the other day about the koi at our local university. He said he was at the pond a couple weeks ago when the fish surfaced wanting to be fed. He said it seemed almost like they wanted you to pet them so he did and they didn't even wince or swim away, they just let him gently stroke their bodies. Weird. For that reason maybe they would know their owner? I don't know.

Eventually yes.Over time, Koi will come to recognize their owners and may be trained to take food directly from your hand,as do my Goldfish,which I have had for many years!

no fish have 5 second memories so unless you feed them every 5 seconds (which is utterly STUPID) they will not remember you.

Sure, but it takes time. Fish DO NOT have a 5-second memory!! my fish all reconize me because whenever someone else feeds them they all hide until the person leaves!lol. but i'm especially pround of my senegal bichir. it can eat from my fingers and is almost fearless! it's a bit annoying sometimes, when i clean the fish tank it just swims around the vacuum (doesnt hide like the rest of the fishes)and i'm afraid that i'll suck the fish in! and if i dont feed it for one day, it swims up and down the tank!
