I just bought 2 goldfishes How can I tell which one is female and which one is male2007-11-24 23:36:42

Should I look at their tails? Also, will two fishes survive in the 5 gallons tank? The sales people at Pet's Mart kept telling me to get at least 20 gallon tank.

wait a few months and if one gets pregnant then you can tell which is which. Otherwise consider them two males or two females and introduce more fish to the tank.

your tank is fine for 2 goldfish..it is very hard to tell the males from the females .they are from the carp family.that might give a little more info than looking under just goldfish..

Sometimes the female goldfish is slightly bigger and of course sometimes you can tell by who is chaseing who the male normally chases the female when it's time to mate

The only way to tell without one getting pregnant is to have a lab test which can be pricey so its best just to make up whitch is male and which is female

You absolutely need the 20 gallon tank, actually a 30 or 50 gallon would be better. Goldfish need all that space (at least 10-12 gallons PER FISH, and more is better) for proper oxygen exchange in their gills. It has nothing to do with filtering waste out of the water, and an "air stone" won't help.
