I need a catfish that can live with freshwater tropical community fish2007-11-24 23:35:38
I have pressed glass marble stones on the bottom of my 20 gallon tank. The little fish cant move the rocks, so alot of food gets down there. Id like a catfish of some sort that will be able to get in there to clean that out, but it cant get too big, or go after the mollies and guppies. Any suggestions?
Answers:Khuli oaches will have a blast rooting through them (They are extremely good/strong when it comes to rooting in stuff)

Corydora cats (cory cats) do best in groups of at least 3, good bottom cleaners

most bottom dwelling cats will not harm the other fish. Try some Corys, they are small.

Most bottom feeding catfish will do well in a tropical community tank. WARNING make sure and get catfish that stay small. Any catfish that gets large has a tendcy to start eating anything that gets in its way.
a pictus catfish would be great. If you upgrade the tank, get a RAPHAEL catfish..cute little bugger!
cory cats!! they are very very good at cleaning gravel and substrate..i have 2 in my 20 gallon and they never stop cleaning, theyre like machines..they are not even a little bit aggresive and get about 2 inches tops..you can also get coolie loaches as they are peaceful little eel looking fish that get about 3 inches long and actually dig through the gravel getting food.they are best in pairs and may dissappear from time to time but they are actually in the gravel when they dissapear..if you ask me tho your best bet is corys
That pretty much limits you to cory cats. Most other cats get rather large, and will eat any thing that fits in their mouths. Also note the catfishes feelers. If they are downward facing it's a bottom feeder. If they are out along the side the catfish is a night predator.
