I need info on certain species of fish, who works with who and who doesnt2007-11-24 23:35:41

I have a 40 gallon fish tank and am wondering if some of the fish that I have, are they good for each other or not. Currently I have a common pleco, 3 Malawi Cichlids, and 1 ghost knife. Is that an appropiate mix? I also have a apple snail in another tank that I'd like to know if I can add.

The cichlids and pleco are just fine together. I wouldn't mix in the Ghost Knife though. Even though they are hiders - they are not armored like the pleco is and therefore susceptible to attack from the cichilds.

What kind of Malawi cichlids are they?

Because you have malawi cichlids, anything you add will have to be compatible with them (i.e., thrive in an active aggressive environment). The pleco might be okay, the ghost knife doesn't belong in there. Anything that is not compatible with the malawi's is at risk of being eliminated by the time your malawi's are full grown.

As far as future additions, you can add semi-aggressive catfish like any of the synodontis species. Pretty much the best route to go, for the well being of your fish, is to stick with just lake malawi african cichlids (keep the ones you have or get more malawis).

Be advised that a 40gal is considered to be on the small side for keeping lake malawi african cichlids (their aggressive nature and territoriality, which intensifies as they grow, dictates a larger tank requirement).
