I once had a Blue Giromi (sp) fish The guy at the pet store said it was friendly
but one by one, the other fish in my tank disappeared. (they were mostly neons) so we had to get rid of the fish. Anyone know why it turned cannibal??
Answers:Also have a Blue Gourami. Did my research and found out it's supposed to be a peaceful schooling fish which can be kept with other gouramis and other fish of any size. However, my experience would tell otherwise. My Blue Gourami kept on chasing and nipping the fins and body of my Silver Dollar, then my Paradise Fish, then my Sunset Variatus Platy. Now he's been transferred to a tank with a divider to make sure he's got no other fish by his side for his killing.
Also have a Pearl Gourami, beautiful fish but even way more aggressive. At least my Blue Gourami hasn't killed any fish yet but my Pearl Gourami has already killed guppies, a Bronze cory, and a Paradise Fish. Now he's also alone in his tank.
they need to have tank mates of a similar size.. not uncommon for fish considered to be 'friendly' to still not be so friendly to much smaller fish.
they are fish and tings can happen. all fish hav different personalities and behaviors even if they are most of the time friendly
you're only a cannibal if you eat your own kind. your gourami had a midnight snack.
gourami and their kind are pretty territorial and agressive actually. only one or 2 types are shy.
i have had a few of this fish! they guy at the pet store should get a new job! they tend to pick on other fish, even their own kind and will eat any fish that are smaller then them! seeing as they tend to get fairly big, this is most other kinds!:)
I had 2 and they beat up my goldfish 3x's their size so badly I had to get a separate tank for the goldfish. I also thought they would be good additions and keep my goldfish company. I guess they had other ideas. Together they were fine and got along.
From what I've read and heard from others on gourami's, they're a 50/50 split on being aggressive or not. I've had some that were, and some that weren't. Might've just liked the look of the small flashy colored neons.
No matter what anyone says, Blue Goramis are not peaceful and cannot be trusted with smaller tank mates. Also, most all blue goramis sold in shops are hybrids and do not have a natural species to talk about. Most hybrids have serious behavioural issues.
Gouramis are oppurtunistic and carnivorous. The guy at the pet shop isn't always right. Last time I asked him if swordtails could jump he said no.
some gourami are somewhat agressive especially a male.
