Fresh water puffers need to be in brackish water (slight amount of salt) They are not a very hardy fish. They can be sluggish at times. Do not allow them to get scared because if they puff up a lot they can fill their air bladder with water and actually drown.

What kind of puffer fish is it? The only real fresh water puffer is a dwarf puffer. The more common ones, green spotted, figure 8, etc. start out in fresh water when they're young, but you need to slowly convert them to brackish if not full marine. Pet stores don't generally tell you this, I've actually only seen 2 that had signs up regarding that. Check these forums for more info on them.

Fresh water puffer fish aren't actually freshwater. Many of them will thrive in a regular marine tank (so will sailfin Mollies). Buy some marine salt (freshwater salt has no minerals added) and add one level teaspoon of salt per gallon of water to the tank, wait two days and do so again. From now on, whenever you do a water change, add two teaspoons of salt/gallon of water to the new water you pour into the tank.

It depends on the species of puffer. Several types of puffer start off in fresh water when young but require brackish conditions as they get bigger. A puffer requiring brackish conditions but kept in fresh water won't do as well as one kept in the proper conditions. If your's is one of these, use marine salt not 'aquarium salt'.

Puffer teeth are fused to form beaks and they grow continuosly. If not worn down they may become overgrown and prevent the puffer from eating. To keep their beaks worn down requires a diet comprised predominantly of mollusks and crustaceans (for example ramhorn snails, clams, crayfish, cockles, shrimp, krill, etc).
