I recently bought a goldfish for my grandson and the fishs tail is starting to change color on his t2007-11-24 23:35:49Answers:

goldfish often change colors from gold to black or silver. sometimes is has to do with temperature change. but its normal.

If it was a baby fish that you origianlly bought this might not be a problem as his tail might be just developing black normally.

yeah i bought 9 of them and the same thing happened to all of them. the person i bought the fish from isnt traceble and so i waited to see what would happen.

But nothing did. My fishes grew bigger and the entire back portion of its body faded. So now all of them have nice polished golden bottoms!

It could be normal color change or it could be ammonia burns. Normally a fish doesn't turn black during a color change, they usually are already black and turn either orange or white. If they are ammonia burns and they are turning black, then its a sign of healing. If the fish was exposed to high levels of ammonia it does burn them, while its not visible when its actually happening it does do damage and can kill them. Now that its healing there is really nothing to do but check the levels in the tank and make sure you have 0 ammonia and 0 Nitrite. Also read up on cycling and make sure your tank is big enough and that you have the right amount of filtration for a goldfish.

It is actually their natural color and they call it juvenile coloring. All goldfish when young are black or have black markings. Cultivated fish almost always lose it because they are bred to lose it.
