Hold his food a few inches above the water and give him treats when he successfully performs a trick. My goldfish are not so clever, they just drift around on their sides on surface and lose wieght.

It depends what you want to teach him. Most things are pretty easy, it's a case of associating food with that action (just like training a puppy or similar).

It would appear the Japanese have worked out a way to teach fish to do tricks, so you may be able to get somewhere with your goldfish after all ;) Good luck!
