I want some seahorses, but my partner says they are too hard to look after being saltwater animals.
Is he right??
Any info on how to care for them would be greatly appreciated.
Answers:It isn't really the seahorses that are difficult it is the saltwater aquarium. There are chemical balances that must be maintained in a saltwater aquarium that are never even considered in a freshwater aquarium. Once you get your aquarium set up and can maintain it everything else is not too difficult. One thing to be considered is that seahorses are not strong swimmers so you don't want a filtration system that causes a strong current that would batter them about the aquarium. They need something to wrap their tails around and they prefer live food.
they are very hard to keep,,,,,you need very expensive equipment
They are wonderful creatures but its a real problem trying to get saddles to fit.
they are not hard to keep as long as you have a salt water setup..they are just another animal in the aquarium..they are very timid, so don't put them in with aggressive fish.they will pick on them..they are great to watch, especially when the MALE gives birth.good luck..
You must have a salt water aquarium. It is much more time consuming and expensive to maintain a sal water aquarium than it is a fresh water one. There may be some species that are fresh water but I am now aware of where you could find them. Why not go to a pet shop and see if you can afford the salt water aquarium ? It is so nice if you can get one set up.
Once you have an established saltwater aquarium system they are not hard to keep up with. Before going out to buy anything I would suggest that you do some research on seahorses, www.reefcentral.com, www.drfostersmith.com. There are tank raised seahorses available that are a bit easier to care for than ones that come from the wild. Go to the local fish stores and see what they have set up, but beware don't believe everything that you hear from the local fish store as their goal is to try to sell you something. It is an expensive hobby though so consider the cost before purchasing anything.
