If I Catch A Fish In A Lake Can I Put It In An Aquarium2007-11-24 23:36:00

i was wondering what if i caught a bass or a catfish,even a bluegill all less then 4 inches.do you think i can put them in my tank with some cichlids(oscars,,jack dempeseys,texas) tank is 60 gallon and my fish are all small.but will they get some kind of sickness from a fish from the lake. let me know please..i apreciate it.

Make sure if you do this to quarantine your catch in another tank specifically setup to quarantine fish in. I have a buddy back east with a 210g tank and he has a Chain Pickerel, 2 Yellow Perch, 1 White Perch, and a host of feeders in there now.

You will want to quarantine him for about 30 days. Evaluate his/her progress over that time, and so long as you do not see any signs of fungus or parasites (many different types - look them up for symtoms) then I would say go for it, but remember - these are game fish you are talking about - not ornamentals. They are use to feeding themselves and feeding on other fish. You could wind up with some problems mixing them up like this.

Personally I keep natural tanks (no ornamental fish).

i wouldnt as the fish may be carrying a paricite or illness, also as you have cichlids i assume you have a tropical tank with a heater so the water wouldnt be the right temp and the conditions would be diffrent to.

also dont forget these wild fish like bass etc get big so as it grows there will be less room in your tank.
