They certainly can be kept in home aquariums and make great aquarium fish. I would not keep them with cichlids which are tropicals because they do have different requirements. Bass and bluegill are coldwater fish and won't like the higher temps the cichlids do. Native fishes generally prefer stronger currents, also. Yes, the native fish will most likely have diseases and parasites that tropicals are not normally exposed to and will have little to no immunity to.

Yes you can put the in a tank with others, but A large mouth bass is more aggressive then any of the others, and make sure you don't catch a mud cat and put it in. I use to have to large mouth Bass and 2 Channel cats, they did great got to big for my 55 gallon so put them in a lake .

You can do anything you want give it a bath before u put it in with your fish the cat fish may eat all your tank fish they would be yummy to a catfish.
