If I take my fish out of the tank while I add aquarium salt to his water, can I put him right back i2007-11-24 23:36:04

I recently purchased a male betta (freshwater fish) yet didn't buy aquarium salts. I just purchased them today and I want to put them into his water as soon as possible. We are leaving for the weekend tomorrow so I dont have time to do a complete water change. Can I just take my betta out, put him in a cup, put the aquarium salts into the water in his tank, and then put him right back in? Will that hurt him? (like, the change from no aquarium salts to having aquarium salts)

you could do that, but i see no reason to remove him from the tank if you don't have to. obviously you know that rocks of salt can burn him so you don't want to just pour them in with him. you can however dissolve them first in a cup of water that you've taken from his tank then add the salty water back in (slowly if you're concerned, but it won't affect him adversely even if you add it all at once).

don't worry about the rapid change in salt concentration; my bettas go from 1tbsp/5gallons (aquarium) to 1tbsp/1gallon (salt bath) and back twice a day as treatment for all fin damage/rot. they actually respond fine.better than to me medicating the tank (which i hate doing). also, i disgree with fish doc. i never treat fin rot with anything more than 15min salt baths twice a day, and i haven't lost a fish to rot since i started. also the baths improve fin regrowth.
