Water conditions have to be just right for fish to breed. Guppies are brackish fish--they will probably never breed unless there is some non-iodine salt in their water (1/2 tsp. per gallon). If the water conditions are right, breeding takes place and 21-40 days later, the female will give birth to live fry. It's important to have plenty of hiding spaces or a breeder box as the other fish WILL try to eat them.

You can tell if your female guppies are pregnant by looking at their belly. You will see a dark spot right above the first bottom fin.

Be careful when buying females already pregnant, no matter what i do they always die a couple of days after introducing them to the tank.

First of all guppies aren't brackish, they are fresh water fish. Secondly, if they were brackish 1/2 a teaspoon wouldn't be enough to make the water brackish. And all females have the dark spot, its called a gravid spot. If they are pregnant their belly will become larger and after a couple weeks you may be able to see the babies eyes.

Guppies are usually pregnant for an average of 28 days. So if you bought a pregnant female you can have babies any day now. If the water isn't right (high levels of ammonia or nitrite) or if they are under a lot of stress, from the move, then they can abort the pregnancy and start all over again.

Sometimes you can buy guppy females that are already pregnant. I have had fry within 4 days!

Make sure you have at least 1 mature male.

Make sure the tank conditions are as close to nature as possible for the species being kept. It takes about 4 weeks after conception. After birth. fry must be segregated from parents or else they will become dinner!
