If goldfish need a lot of space why do pet stores sell goldfish bowls2007-11-24 23:35:59

I read up on goldfish and learned they an live more than 20 years but that they grow pretty big and need a lot of oxygen and space. isn't it irresponsible to sell a product made for goldfish that has less than 1 gallon?

The many people who said pet stores are in business to make money are right on. What they didn't say, or maybe didn't know, is that the little goldfish will only last so long in a small unfiltered bowl. Soon the poor little guy will get sick and need medication which they will gladly sell you, then they die and you will go back to the store and buy another one and another one and another one.that's the business they are in!

If the stores actually helped you and told you what you really needed to take care of your fish, the only thing you would buy from them is food. Did you ever notice that all the fish food cans say to feed them 3 times a day? That is so you will buy lots of food. Well, my fish get fed once a day and sometimes I skip a day or two per week. The only fish that need to be fed 3 times a day are fry (baby fish). The fry need a constant supply of high protein food so they can grow to be big healthy fish. Low quality food will not allow them to reach their full potential.

Because pet stores are in the business to make money and a lot more people will pay a little money for a bowl than a lot of money for an aquarium. Besides, once they have you hooked, there's a good chance you'll come back and buy something larger, more fish and spend more money!

It is just like people. We have more comfort in bigger landscapes (like the middle of Iowa where there is miles of no one around) but have the ability to remain alive and living (like in NY city) as long as we have the proper care and shelter to breathe.

unfortunately, many pet stores are more concerned about money than the welfare of animals. then when people see that the pet store sells the items they assume that its okay to use, but many times pet store products ARE NOT.

you generally get bigger tanks as the fish gets bigger, I mean. why would you put a new goldfish thats maybe an inch or less long into a 20 gallon tank?
