If someone lost both their legs, would it be possible to make a prosthetic tail like a mermaid2007-11-24 23:36:07

I don't know what made me think of this, but I think it would be neat if they could make a prosthetic tail for someone if they lost both legs. They would be able to swim underwater like a fish. It seems possible.has anyone else ever thought about this? BTW, I don't mean to offend anyone by asking this so I'm sorry if I do.

It'd be totally awesome.

Set-ups already exist that can allow prosthetic arms that move in response to mental commands.

There's one out-there scientist who theorized that we could add mechanical wing sockets, or spread out some of our ribs to create a glider-like effect.

I agree with other posters, though, in that keeping the upper half from rotting or simply drowning while underwater may be a challenge.

Of course it's possible, but the person would get water logged after awhile. Imagine how they would look and feel on land crawling around with that tail on! Sort of like a fish out of water??

I suppose, but I don't see why you would want to. People spend most of their time out of water anyway; what use would a tail be for walking? Besides, they sell these flipper things that you can wear in the water, and guess what - they're removeable.
