I was wondering because I put one in my goldfish tank yesterday.
Answers:We started out with 2 snails, and ended up with (last count) 50 snails living in the tank. They are more fertile than rabbits!!
well, make sure it is a freshwater snail. we have a salt water tank, and boy do those things reproduce in there. its really cute to see the tiny ones on the walls in their little snail shell (make sure you have really small shells, like REALLY small, or else it will just get eaten. the ones we usually see, with shell, are only about an eighth of an inch

It depends on the type. Some snails need mates, and others can go solo. Generally the tiny ones that hitch a ride on plants are bad news and will reproduce madly. The apple/mystery/trapdoor snails you buy in fish stores need a mate and reproduce more slowly.
