Im having difficulty deciding between having a tank of2007-11-24 23:37:02

I have a 55 gallon tank of fresh water community fish .. but I also like the semi-aggressive and aggressive fish as well. Are there any specific positives or negatives about switching from one to the other ? Such as .. semi-aggressives are harder to take care of because .. (?) etc.. Or it really doesn't matter which you go with as far as care and tending to the fish and tank ? ::::::::::::::::::::::

This chart will tell you what you can get away with adding to your tank. Because of it's size, you can add a few plants and get away with quite a bit as there is lots of room for territories. I would suggest however, that you add freshwater salt to your tank to protect the fish from infection due to fin-nipping

You can't have as many aggresive fish, because they each need their own territory. Community ones you can have more cause they get along! Most are smaller and you can put decorations in the tank so they can swim in and out of (like castles etc.). Peaceful to watch! The bigger ones you can feed other fish to, that can be good or bad! Big fish need big hiding spots (rocks etc.). You still need to do water changes on a regular basis no matter what. Remember: about an inch of fish per gallon of water - and think how big they will get at full grown!

The main difficulty with fish that are aggressive is that they bully and nip other fish and keep them from feeding. A 55 gal. tank is big enough for 1 or 2 semi-agressive fish and a community of other fish if the semi-agressive fish are small. The others should have plenty of room to get out of their way. Try to provide some type of plant or ornamental hiding spots at all levels (surface, middle, and at the bottom) of the aquarium for the more timid fish so they can escape the bullies.
