I've had oscars for over 10 years and right now have a 10 inch albino tiger oscar. First-for one oscar you will need at least a 55 gallon tank. In smaller tanks, they will grow fast and then be prone to diseases simply because of their amout of poop and messy habits.

Two oscars = 75 gallon tank

3-4 oscars = 125 gallon tank

Oscars grow very fast and will be 8-10 inches long in their first year if you feed and take care of them properly. This includes regular (weekly) partial (25-30%) water changes and high protein food. No live feeder fish (they bring diseases into your tank).

I had Oscar's for years as well. You need a lot of room! 55+ gallons. We had a 150 gallon tank and my albino Tiger, Orval, got to be HUGE! The eat a lot, and they love worms. A lot of room is the most important part. You'll also want to make sure you're getting enough oxygen mixed with it's water.

If you haven't kept fish before, do some reading on things like nitrogen cycle, etc. as you will have to cycle your tank to avoid harming your fish. go to www.fishforums.com message board and check out the cycling info.

Oscars are nice fish, but do get very large, as everyone has said. And they have to have a big enough tank to live in. It is not true that they only grow as large as the tank.
