Im planning to buy an arrowana any info on what is the best arrowana in the market2007-11-24 23:37:04Answers:

There are a handful of arowana species available, although some are much easier to come by than others. Most prevalent is the silver arowana from the Amazonian river delta -- they reach about 3 to 4 feet in length, and are voracious eaters, but they ignore anything that doesn't seem like food. As the first poster said, you need a big tank to deal with these guys. I've known some to keep them in ponds over the summer -- although this is clearly not ideal. I've kept them in 600+ gallon tanks, and that was enough for one. When they get mature, they are a bit territorial, so it's tough to keep them both happy in one tank.

Black arowanas are probably the next most common -- a different species, but grow to a similar size and temperament. They lose the attractive striping they have when young, and end up looking very similar to the silver arowanas (perhaps a bit duskier).

Jardini arowanas are from Australia, and get a bit over 2 feet in length. Again, big tank is a must.

There are african arowanas, but few people get them because they are not very outstanding to look at.

The last is the asian or Formosa arowanas. They are arguably the nicest and most impressive arowanas, but because of CITES restrictions, you can't get them in the U.S. Other countries do have some access to them, but still are prohibitively expensive -- anywhere from $2 - 3,000 to $15 - 25,000 a fish. They come in green, gold, red varieties, with several variations between them. They are a bit more peaceful than the other species of arowana, but still get quite large, 2 -3 feet.

Hope it helps!

the question is do you have a tank big enough,i had one in a 135 and it out grew it need a 220 at least in my opinion if so the jardini is the biggest you got the black green and the silvers is the most popular but i think they are out of season right now they are all pretty cool .
they are hard for some pets stores to get right now but they get big and are mean.. u should deff read up on them first..
I believe the silver variety is more common, from what I've seen anyway.
