Im taking fish on an hours trip tomorrow, should I add oxygen tablets to the bags2007-11-24 23:37:05

I know some people use "Bag Buddies" (http://www.theshippingbarn.com/bag_buddi. but I can't get ahold of them in time. The fish will be in bags for at least an hour and a half on the trip there, and if some aren't sold (he isn't sure if he wants the females) I'm not sure how long they will be bagged for. Sites like this (http://www.atchison.com/articlesandstori. suggest that I don't really nead tablets in it, but I just want to make sure all the fish handle the trip as well as possible. I am taking 8 male endlers and about 16 females, I've split the fish off into males and females already, haven't fed them today, and so on. Also, how many fish per bag? I have really large ones that are used to ship 6-8 inch fish.

Your fish should be fine for several hours in the bags. I would not put more than 3 fish per bag. I would also use a Styrofoam box to haul them in as that will keep the temperature as even as possible. I have had fish shipped overnight mail and they have been fine.

the bigger the vessel, the more available O2. I used buckets with lids for my fish. I had several large Oscars, an Apacu, a 16 inch shark, a snake fish, and many large cichlids. I used a battery operated air pump once, to get a very sick shark to my house, but otherwise, if you sprinkle a tsp of table salt/ gallon H2O it will naturally add O2 to the water, and aid in fish's intake of air over gills.If you must use bags, I would do 2, or 3 per bag, and fill up with adequate water. let bags trap air as you twist and seal bags. Good luck and safe journey.Re-bag fish(add more air, as done before) if 2nd trip is necessary.

Bags are best for small fish as they don't bash against hard boxes - so you are right there.

I would do 4 fish per bag as they are small and wont be in there more then 8 hours. 1 part water 3 parts air should do without tabs, but I have never tried this, I've only read about it and received shipped fish.

I've moved a few times and had to transport tropical freshwater fish 2 hours before. Put a large garbage bag in a solid cooler with a lid. Use your current fish tank water and fill the cooler no more than 3 quarters full. By using you own tanks water it should lower the stress level for the fish. Once an hour the cooler needs to be open for fresh air.

Don't use O2 tablets - they are crap.

Just get a battery operated airstone.
