Importance Of Co2 systems i aquarium2007-11-24 23:37:07

Hi,

I have a fish tank with lots of plants. Lastime somebody tried to sell me a Co2 equipment, saying it will improve the plant growth.

I always thought fish produce co2 & there should be enough co2 in the tank for plants!

Please tell me if its necessary or the guy was just trying to make money out of me..

I actually just bought a book on week by week setup of your new aquarium, here is what it says:

"In a natural aquatic habitat, the respiration of other living organisms produces enough CO2 as a 'waste product' to sustain photosynthesis. In the enclosed environment of an aquarium, however, there is not enough respiration taking place to maintain sufficiently high CO2 levels for optimum photosynthetic activity. Adding carbon dioxide gas directly to the water makes up for this shortfall." Then it goes on to describe what types of equipment to get and how to use it and so on. But I'm sure you get the main idea.

So I would say if you have plants in your aquarium it would be best to get the CO2 equipment. What kind is going to depend on the size of your aquarium. Good luck!

It is a neccessity if you want to maintain your planted aquarium. Without sufficent Co2 and fert and lighitng.. plants will die preety fast.

and yes i agree with the point that Co2 is essential for plant growth. BUT if you do intall it. please switch it off at night.

My friend's fish got CO2 poisoning when he forgot to switch it off.

Half his tank got wiped out.

It will improve plant growth, and the guy is trying to make money out of you. It really depends on if you have money to burn, and your plant are doing well. Your filter is constant aerating the water which will result in a healthy mix of O2, and CO2. The C02 equipment will boost the amount of CO2 without reducing the amount of O2. (CO2 is pretty harmless if the level of O2 is good.) This will encourage plant growth. It comes down to if you've good the money, and interest.
