In my fish tank, I noticed there is film of cloudy stuff on the surface, has anyone heard of this2007-11-24 23:37:08

I noticed this the other day, so I cleaned the fish tank out, but the next day the same film reappeared. I have a betta and an african dwarf frog. Both animals look pretty healthy to me.but I wonder whats happening to the water? I use this water conditioner called prime, does that factor in to it?

If you are using a charcoal filter it could be charcoal dust. You have to rinse charcoal very well before putting it in the filter. Take a very clean cup or glass and put it in the water with the open side just above the surface of the water. Lower it in so that only the surface water flows into the cup in a thin stream and the filmy surface water will fill the cup leaving the cleaner water in the tank. Dump it out and repeat if any is still in the tank. This way you will not have to empty the whole tank. Replace with clean water if the level is too low. Stop using the Prime or use less of it and see if the problem clears up.

it's probably becuz of over feeding. i had this problem for one month and i was going crazy, my fishes were dying and i wasn't very happy about it. then, on suggestion of other ppl on "Yahoo!! Answer" i cleaned the tank and started giving my fish, two flakes for each fish, twice daily. since then my tank is clean, fishes are healthy and me, well very happy :)

scum from to much food..siphon the bottom of tank replace and clean filters charcoal..and when you siphon you will be adding some fresh water.test water.

But I have a male Beta fish. My best advice for you for water ---always use drinking water. First of all its cheap, and second its good for the fish and you don't have to buy tablets or any other things to clean the water. My fish stills lives a long life!
