Is a 25 gallon tank enough for having 3 guppies2007-11-24 23:37:10

I have 3 guppies in a 2.5 gallon tank. The tank has an undergravel filter and i plan on buying a larger tank when they start reproducing. Should i get a new tank? What size tank should I get? What type of filter should i use for this new tank?

With a air stone and plant, yes. s far as a new tank goes, he bigger the better, You cannot have any sort of breeding operation with less then a ten gallon, but if you go to a twenty, you could buy a tank divider for $8 and have to use only one filter and heater.

yes small but yes but I personally would get a 10-20 gallon tank in case they have babies.

good luck with your guppies. they usually reproduce all the time. even if they are in seperate tanks. they usually stay fairly small though, so don't worry about the tank size.

Should be, I always went by the 1 gallon per fish rule. I think the ones with charcoal filters are the best though because you dont have to clean the tank so often

I'd go with the largest tank you can afford/accomodate. What are you going to do with the babies? You will be overrun with guppies very quickly lol. As far as filters go, I like the Penguins or Marinelands. Rule of thumb, whatever size tank you have, add a 0 at the end, meaning, if you have a 55 gallon tank, you'll want a filter that will produce at least 550 gallons per hour. But, if you have messy fish, like an oscar, you'll want more than that.

I always went by the fish per/gallon thing, also. However, guppies are so very small I think they will be fine for now. When you buy a larger tank, underground filters are great! I would stick with it. I also used, in addition to the underground filter, a bio filter. The Bio filter may not be good for your guppies or their fry, because it is just another source of suction to pull them out of the tank!
