Is it alright to feed my pond fish if we have some warm days whereby the water temp is above 50 degr2007-11-24 23:37:15

Once the weather turned cold here in Michigan, I stopped feeding my pond fish. But recently, we have had some warmer days and the fish are active and looking hungry. Should I give in and feed them a little. It's going to be a long winter of hybernation ahead of them.

Answers:

Absolutely not, if the temp has been below 55 degrees for an appreciable length of time, their metabolism has slowed for the winter.

If you feed them now, the food will not move through the digestive tract properly and may cause blockage which could conceivably kill them.

BTW, once the pond has frozen, do not break the ice. The shock waves from the blows to the ice will damage the fish's swim bladder and could kill them outright.

I have been told that if the water temp is over 40 degrees you can feed your fish outside, but if the water temp is above that its fine.
Here's a good article I found the other day. I'd say if it's going to be warm for a few days(including the evenings) go with the wheat germ.
