Is it common for goldfish or shubunkins to eat Plecostomus2007-11-24 23:37:15

I have 2 goldfish and 1 shubunkin in a 10 gallon tank. They are the only survivors. The ghost shrimp got eaten. The Plecostomus has been the latest victim. The lady at the pet store said the Plecostomus would do well with the goldfish and shubunkin. I guess she was wrong.

A shubunkin is also a goldfish and all goldfish need a minimum of 10 gallons each. Since you had 3 goldfish, a pleco (probably a common which need to be in a 55 gallon) and ghost shrimp in a tiny 10 gallon it caused loads of problems. All the ammonia all those things give off could of killed every one of them. The ghost shrimp could of died from the ammonia then eaten or just eaten since they shouldn't be in a tank with goldfish, they are too small. Plecos also shouldn't be in a tank with goldfish but not because the goldfish eat them but because the plecos usually eat the goldfish. A lot of algae eaters when they get older become carnivorous and they like the taste of the slime coat. If you want those goldfish to live then get them a larger tank, at least 30 gallons but bigger if you can since that shubunkin can grow to around a foot and the others can grow around 8".

How big are your goldfish? the pleco? All goldfish will eat things small enough. But really, a 10 gallon tank is nowhere near big enough for those types of fish. Goldfish can get 8-10 inches easily in an aquarium, and some plecos can reach 20 inches. I have a 14 inch pleco in my 125 gallon tank.

unless the pleco is dead already. The armor on the pleco is way too tough. It must have died and the goldfish flip him over for the soft belly.
