Yes, if you're a beginner but just do a lot of research before hand. It's also rather pricey too. They say the bigger the tank the easier it is to maintain. So, if you can start with a 55 gallon, it'd be easier. Here's some links for fish forums, most have articles on starting up tanks etc. and what you need. Just search around them.

Yes the tank is really hard to keep clean, it is really disgusting and it stinks!!
In my experience, saltwater was alot easier to take care of than freshwater. I do recommend starting with a freshwater tank if you've never had one, just to gain experience. It can be extremely costly if you make a mistake with a saltwater tank (fish and live rock can be very expensive and often carry no guarantee). Saltwater tanks, once stabilized, tend to take care of themselves, all I ever had to do was add water when it evaporated. The fish eat the algae off the sides and keep the rocks clean.
A fish-only marine tank is about as much work as a regular aquarium, but you need some extremely good filters and lights and the start up expense can be huge. Reef tanks are much more difficult since the life in them tend to be filter feeders.

many people say they are very hard to take care of and they are partly right.i would not start up a saltwater tank unless you have experience with fish and did a fair amount of good research. i have a 75 gal. saltwater tank and it is quite difficult to set up at first and is hard to get the levels of nitrites, nitrates, ammonia, salt, etc. and the right level. it takes a lot of time before you can put things in it (even hermit crabs and such). i bought live rock from florida in mine and live sand from aruba and it made things much easier and saved time..they are very expensive and frustrating at first but once you get them running well they are quite easy to maintain and basically run and filter themselves. i think the beauty of them is worth every penny.

ps.mine doesnt smell
