Is it necessary to treat the water in your fish tank , or can you just use filtered water2007-11-24 23:37:18

The fish tank insructios said not to use tap water so I was wondering if you could just use filtered water so you dont have to buy the drops to treat the water.

Buying filtered water or filtering it yourself and having to buy the new cartridges will end up costing more then a bottle of water conditioner. I use Prime, it may cost more then others but it also last a lot longer since you don't use as much. It's supposed to be one of the best ones since it removes ammonia and detoxifies nitrite and nitrate. Here is a site that explains all that it does, http://www.seachem.com/products/product_.

the chems are not expensive, Ihave many tanks I have to take care of and the chems. I personaly use the more expinsive ones but they do make cheap ones that work!

Aquachris is also right If you leave the water out for 24 hrs it becomes "stale" and then it is safer for the fish!

Tap water only needs to be treated to remove chlorine and chloramine from it, then it is safe for your fish. You can buy a bottle of dechlor very cheaply and it will last for a long time, as you only use a few drops or so per gallon. They will try to sell you a lot of other products for the water, but you don't need them - just one that removes chlorine and chloramine. Use it when you first set up the tank, then on any new water you add to the tank.
