Is it ok to cut the lips off of a piranah2007-11-24 23:37:38

Im going to get a black piranha, and I want to cut its lips off so when it grows, you can see its teeth, would this harm it? I know fish don't have nerves(cant feel) so what harm would this cause? Who has done it? Is it awesome?

Putting my personal feelings aside, I will try to give you helpful info.

A lot of research has been done into the study of fish nervous systems and it has been determined that fish do, indeed, feel pain. If you want to know more about it I can find the studies but for now I have another interesting read. Here is an article put out by Practical Fishkeeping (popular and well respected in the UK and US) that talks about the practice of surgically altering your fish. I hope that it will help you to make an informed decision and realize the impact of that decision. You should also consider that performing such a surgery may be considered physically mutilating an animal in your state and may be a criminal offense.

Are you saying that you are going to get a pair of freaking scissors, grab your fish out of the freaking tank, and cut its lips off? WTF!? Dude, don't you think it would be a little wierd if your parents decided to cut your lips off? How would he hold the food in his mouth? (It would fall out, just so you know.) It would look pretty cool though.
