Is it ok to put platy in breeder net2007-11-24 23:11:36

i bought a breeder net for my pregnant platy.

im not sure when she is gonna give birth, but is it ok to put her in there for couple of days?

and what should i do after she gives birth?

do i just take her out and put her back in to the tank?

Answers:

While breeder nets can stress some fish pretty badly, I have never had a major problem with them over all. That said I would encourage you to use a birthing tank for the female filled with plastic plants and other cover for the fry to hide in once they are born and before you can remove the female. That would be far less stressful for her and also easier on the fry.

Breeder nets cause way too much stress for a pregnant fish. Most times the female will end up aborting her brood due to the stress. The stress also lowers her immune system, opening her up to all sorts of diseases. It's best to either let her give birth in the tank and then scoop the babies into the net, or put her in a seperate tank, let her give birth, and then remove her. After your female gives birth she doesn't require any special care. Just keep the babies away or she (and any other fish around) will eat them.

It's OK. If you don't remove her after she gives birth, she will eat her fry.

I prefer a 3 way trap to a net, but you have to work with what you have...

Well i have raised platys for about 6 years now and everytime i have a pregnant fish i put her in a breeeding net. It will not hurt her just put in a plant with her. If you can make it a real Java Moss. That will give her a hiding place and when the babies come they cen hide there and have a home. And when she has the babies you should take her out within 24 hours of their birth. That way she can get al of them out in enough time. When the fry get about half the size of your adult platys then you can set them free into the tank with the other fish. Hope that was what you were looking for. I put my platy in the net and she died, now I check the tank often when I have pregnant fish, If they are resting on the bottom, or being chased by the other fish, check your tank often. I also let some of my plants float to the top, to give the baby fish a hiding spot until I catch them.
