Is it okay to keep 1 yellowtail damselfish, 1 royal gramma basslet and 1 ocellaris clown in a 12 gal
If it is not okay, please tell me why and suggest the best fish arrangement for a 12 gallon nano cube.
Answers:Hi,
I have a 12 gal nano as well, and I have two yellowtails and one perc clownfish, with tons of corals. I also have a 29 gallon reef. The yellowtails will do fine with the clown fish, I would refrain from adding the royal gramma, their territorial nature is very unpredictable. You may get one that has no prblem with others around it or it may try and pick fights with everything. I have seen too many of these cause problems in small tanks. If you are looking for another fish to add try looking at a ground dwelling fish. Examples: Small gobies, shrimp gobies, one dragonet (its called a scotter blennie~ however wait about a month before you add it to the tank). If you want some good ideas of nano fish try www.liveaquaria.com ~> click on the marine fish tab then on the nano fish link.
To be perfectly honest, marine fish usually need more than 12 gallons for their tanks. Damselfish -could- possibly survive in it, although you could only put one in. The gramma would probably need about a 20 gallon or so, and same with the clown. So, my best suggestion would be that, if you wanted those three particular fish, get a bigger tank, like a 50 gallon or bigger. It's harder for saltwater fish to survive in a smaller tank, because it adds stress to them. They need more room to swim around than freshwater fish do.
