Is it possible to have a lazy betta
I have bought my son a betta last weekend. Checked the water quality and all that stuff and put the fish in the tank. It is about a 1 1/2 gallon tank. Plenty of room for a betta. However he swims over to the fake plant thingy I have in there and near the surface and lays on a leaf up against the side of the tank. I found him one morning laying on the thermometer. Each time I think he is dead because his fins stop wiggling and everything. Is there something I need to be checking about the water quality or his diet? Or is it possible that this fish is just lazy?
Answers:It sounds like he is bored. Or the nitrate, or ammonia levels are high. The temp could be a bit low. Be sure he's around 80. You can ignore pH, KH. Once you remove the cholorine tap water can't legally be in bad ranges for a betta. Betta don't care unless the change is rapid. Any thing other than temp, ammonia, and nitrate you can ignore. (Well nitrites are important, but if you control ammonia, and nitrates you'll fix any nitrite issue.)
Food needs to be a flake or pellet that's mostly meaty. (worm/shrimp/fish.) Freeze dried blood worms, and/or brineshrimp are a healthy treat. Just be sure not to over feed.
To combat boredom I'd put a mirror next to his tank for a 1/2 hours a couple of times a week. He'll flare, and act crazy mad for a while. This will get his blood pumping, and make him more active.
PS- Read betta talk's feeding and water sections.
I think so!
What is a lazy betta?
i think and do so
you should drop him in a water lily bulb and in a week he will have a live plant he will love it & maybe be more active.I have 3 bettas and live plants in each one and they are hardly still!
Hey!..I also have a betta question open in here. While reading my answers I was also searching the net and found this site..you should check it out.

Is it a female? I have seen my female do that to avoid a male during spawning. Perhaps it just likes to stay there? Bettas are supposed to breathe air. He might be too lazy to keep swimming at the top for air.
yes it is probably old and you don't even know it or it may just be lazy and active at night.
