Is it possible to over-oxygenate a fishtank2007-11-24 23:11:37

A friend asked me to look after goldfish and frogs in a tank fitted with an oxygenator gismo, a little aerating bubble-thing. When I got it the sponge filter was plugged, so I clearned it thoroughly, hugely increasing the bubble input, thereby increasing the oxygen, I assume. Well, soon after, perhaps 30 minutes, two of the goldfish took huge leaps out of the tank and expired before I discovered them. The frogs too were hyperactive. I feed them the same stuff my friend did, fish-food pellets and blood-worms. What's happening?

I guess the simple air pump couldn't be the culprit in over oxygenating the water. Unless the water is cold and you're really injecting pure oxygen through your water.

Chances is that you might have accidentally killed the beneficial bacteria that being hosted on sponge filter during your washing and your Ammonia probably sky rocketed after that, prompting your goldfishes and frog to behave as they did.

There is probably some reasons why the goldfish jumped out, the tank water was to hot, ammonia was to high (happens when there isn't enough bacteria in the tank but to much waste the air pumps could have killed the bacteria) and they decided to jump out instead instead of having there gills burn.

If you cleaned the sponge on the sponge filter then you killed off all beneficial bacteria and, basically, UN-cycled the tank. This caused ammonia levels to sky-rocket (esp. with goldfish--the ammonia producer champions!) and that is why they went berserk. I think you owe your friend some new fish!
